Helicopter induction

This one-day course will provide Western Power personnel and helicopter operators with a clear statement of Western Power’s requirements for overhead power line inspections/patrols by helicopter.

Who should attend

Western Power Customer relationship–lineworkers who have the capacity and ability to be an observer, identifying faults which will reduce the outage and restoration times for distribution and transmission faults.

Prerequisites

The prerequisite for attendance at this training course is:

  • Network Authority Card (NAC)

Learning outcomes

As a result of attending this course participants should be able to:

  • record all details of inspections/patrols undertaken, including times, lines inspected/patrolled on the Aerial Patrol Flight Report form
  • confirm inspection/patrol route with pilot
  • notify the nominated command centre (NCC) of faults found and any fault restorations that have been completed
  • make scheduled calls from the helicopter during inspections/patrols flights to the NCC
  • follow the instructions of the pilot at all times when within or in close proximity to the helicopter in all matters relating to operation of the helicopter and safety
  • participate fully in all briefings and debriefings provided by the pilot and Western Power’s supervisor
  • conduct the inspection/patrol according to the instructions received from Western Power’s supervisor and as outlined in this document
  • complete the Aerial Patrol Flight Report form prior to and during the inspections/patrols
  • make scheduled hourly calls from the helicopter during inspections/patrols flights to the NCC
  • notify the pilot immediately if they accidentally upset the operation of or damage any part of the helicopter

PPC/PPE and equipment requirements

Some of the practical training for this course will take place in an operational area. You are required to have/provide Western Power approved PPC and PPE requirements for the practical work. Refer to the Western Power PPE Procedure Sections 3.1 & 3.2, for these requirements.

Assessments

Assessments are included in this course. Participants will not be considered to have completed this course until all assessments have been completed to a satisfactory level.
