High voltage (HV) insulator coating

This two day course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to carry out overhead line insulator coating principles and procedures, and the skills to coat insulators supporting energised high voltage conductors.

Note:

To undertake this course, the client must provide the necessary plant and equipment, ie:

  • high voltage insulated EWP fitted with high voltage earth lead and spike
  • silicone pump and product
  • insulated silicone delivery hose
  • insulated spray wand and jets
  • silicone wipes or similiar cleaning products
  • a wind meter

Note: All equipment must be in-test.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for attendance at this training course are:

  • Network Authority Card (NAC)
  • Certificate III in ESI – Distribution overhead qualification
  • High risk licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more)
  • Licence to perform high risk work – WP (elevating work platform)

Note: All prerequisites need to be current.

Learning outcomes

As a result of attending this course participants should be able to:

  • identify and apply worksite safety requirements
  • identify and prepare equipment for insulator coating
  • inspect and maintain tools and equipment used for insulator coating
  • apply coating to insulators supporting high voltage apparatus

PPC/PPE and equipment requirements

Some of the practical training for this course will take place in an operational area. You are required to have/provide Western Power approved PPC and PPE requirements for the practical work. Refer to the Western Power PPE Procedure Sections 3.1 & 3.2, for these requirements.

Note: Power Training Services does not provide PPE, PPC and tools for training courses.

Assessments

Assessments are included in this course. Participants will not be considered to have completed this course until all assessments have been completed to a satisfactory level.
