Heavy rigid vehicle recovery

The one-day course is designed to assist those operating heavy vehicles, on or off road, to recover vehicles safely using a range of techniques and combinations of techniques to enable either:

  • full recovery of operating vehicles; or
  • move non-operational vehicles to safe location to avoid further damage and enable infield repairs to occur safely and/or enable recovery using a heavy recovery vehicle.

Note – Client to provide:

  • Two heavy vehicles (one with winch)
  • Ground anchors

Note: This course is delivered by a third party training provider.

Who should attend

This course is suitable for Western Power personnel who are required to recover heavy rigid vehicles.

Prerequisites

  • Drive heavy rigid vehicle

Note: All prerequisites need to be current.

Learning outcomes

As a result of attending this course participants should be able to:

  • Recover heavy vehicles using driving skills
  • Recover vehicle using mechanical techniques, e.g. released seized brakes
  • Recovery using simple tools, e.g. shove, max tracks
  • Recovery using advanced techniques including:
    • Direct winch (recover self using ground anchor other vehicle
    • Direct winch (recover by other vehicle)
    • Indirect winch (using snatch block)
    • Use tow strap/chains to move vehicle to safe location

PPC/PPE and equipment requirements

Some of the practical training for this course will take place in an operational area. You are required to have/provide Western Power approved PPC and PPE requirements for the practical work. Refer to the Western Power PPE Procedure Sections 3.1 & 3.2, for these requirements.

Note: Power Training Services does not provide PPE, PPC and tools for training courses.

Assessments

Assessments are included in this course. Participants will not be considered to have completed this course until all assessments have been completed to a satisfactory level.
